St. Mary was founded in 1843. It began as the earliest Catholic group in Shiawassee County consisting of a few Irish families. These families lived in the Southwestern corner of Woodhull Township. Fr. George Godez, a Hungarian, who came from Detroit in 1843 help organize this vibrant Catholic group. In 1870, Fr. Joseph Kramer, was appointed to mission this Catholic group. In addition, he also was responsible for Saginaw, Clinton, and Genesee Counties. Fr. Kramer said Mass once a month on a weekday for the Irish families living on the southern boundary of the county in Antrim township. In 1891, with a population of 422 in Morrice a lot was purchased to build a new church. Four parishioners, from St. Mary's, purchased the land for Bethaney Cemetery in 1901. The first burial is believed to be Lawrence Tyrrell in 1904. Fr. Peter Jordan, son of Mr.& Mrs. Patrick Jordan was the first priest ordained (July 1913) from St. Mary's. Second priest, ordained (Oct 1978) was Fr. George Michalek, son of Mr. & Mrs. George J. Michalek. He was ordained by Bishop Kenneth Povish at St. Mary's Cathedral. 1908- Altar Society began. 1985- Usher's Club name changed to Men's Club. 1992- First R.C.I.A class. 1993 -First Evangelization meeting. 1994 -Mission statement was adopted. Today - St. Mary's community is as vibrant as found in 1843. Masses are now being offered every day with many other prayers and devotions. Morrice has so many dedicated people that are commited to the service of our Lord. Future - Purchased 33 acres with the vision of building a new church for our Blessed Mother and the building of new facilities to meet the ever growning needs of the community.
